Victory Vision Publishing recently helped publish Nick Foulks’ Food for Thought: 20 Life Lessons from a Southern Black Mother, which captures his family heritage in the form of wise sayings he learned from his mother. That got us thinking: how many of us wish we could have a collection of the thoughts and life lessons from our ancestors?
Adam Fleming, VVP CEO, writes:
In 2024, my aunt and uncle decided to move to Minnesota, so we all helped clean stuff out and pack them up. You know how that goes: stuff to keep, throw out, send to thrift stores, and stuff that makes you say, “what do I do with this?” This included a few 130-year-old photos of my ancestors, six or seven generations back! My aunt gave them to me, effectively passing them down one more time, but all we had on the back were names scrawled in my late grandmother’s cursive handwriting:
“Jonathan Niles + Esther Harte Niles:
Ruth Niles Fleming’s paternal great-grandparents”
I wish someone had asked grandma to write a bit more about them.
I wondered what they cared about, what they believed in, what stories may have gotten passed down from them through the generations, what wise sayings they loved to quote. Every family has their sayings, but where did those sayings come from? Why were they important? I found myself wishing I had a better idea of the legacy that I carry, wishing I knew how long certain values had been in my family. What if . . . what if my grandmother had recorded something of their essence?
Your family could lose all these things . . . or you could give them a gift that can last many lifetimes in the form of a hardcover book full of wisdom. It’s a tribute to your late loved ones, a gift to your living elders, and a blessing to your children or grandchildren to pass on. It’s a gift that can be treasured for many generations.
So, when Nick Foulks approached us about also publishing a Food for Thought personalized journal for readers to have their own collection of sayings, we collaborated with him and decided to streamline this process for you!
We call it the Food for Thought: Our Family’s Recipe for Wisdom book.
